China has a large, dynamic and complex city system. This one is divided into three levels based on their -administrative statuses. The three are county –level cities, prefecture-level cities and 3 central municipalities. From 1993 to 2000 these three levels has changed in numbers a lot. The city of Chongqing became the fourth central municipality in July 1997.When the cities are at different statuses, they get different levels of authority, like investment decision making and foreign-funded project approvals. When the level is higher, then more directly the city reports to Beijing and greater is its autonomy and influence.
The definition of China cities is not that simple. Chinese cities are administrative entities and must be officially designated, with designation criteria; this means that it must be a function of political-administrative status, economic development, openness, and total population of an urban place. There have been many upgrades in the status in the administrative hierarchy and what includes and all this efforts have brought a significant growth in China’s urban sector in the past two decades. As an example many county seats were reclassified as cities, what increase the total number of cities.
To explain better this topic China classifies cities in five categories according to their sizes, super large for cities with the greatest population, very large, large, medium and small cities. The majority of Chinese cities are small. Because all of this that I explained before the geographical situation in china has changed a lot, with the increased of cities that there weren’t cities before and this have increased china’s total gross domestic product, national industrial output and total exports. The Chinese city system exhibit great impacts of china’s urban development strategies. How is this? Heavy industries are grown, the cities are considered as potential places for industrial plants.
Since many years, China has moved really quickly its urbanization. As prove of that its urban population increased from 172 million to 458 million, and the urban population share increased too. The China’s urban policy, play a roll favoring the development of small cities. This Chinese policy has been question by scholars in recent years. China city system has also been affected by migration policy, so they limited rural- to –urban migration, especially to large cities. China’s city system will be determined by market forces rather than by government intervention.
